Google Analytics 4 Setup Guide for Beginners (2026)
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) replaced Universal Analytics in 2023. If you're still confused by it, you're not alone. Here's a clear guide.
Why GA4?
- Cookie-free future (privacy-focused)
- Cross-platform tracking (web + app together)
- Event-based model (more flexible)
- Free and integrates with Google Ads
Setup in 5 Steps
1. Create Property
- Go to analytics.google.com
- Admin → Create Property
- Enter business name and details
- Choose "Web" as your data stream
2. Get Your Measurement ID
Format: G-XXXXXXXXXX
3. Add Tracking Code
Add to your site's <head>:
<script async src="https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=G-XXXXXXXXXX"></script>
<script>
window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
function gtag(){dataLayer.push(arguments);}
gtag('js', new Date());
gtag('config', 'G-XXXXXXXXXX');
</script>
4. Verify Installation
In GA4, go to Reports → Realtime. Open your website in another tab. You should see yourself in the real-time report within seconds.
5. Set Up Conversions
Mark important actions as "conversions":
- Contact form submissions
- Newsletter signups
- WhatsApp button clicks
- Course enrollments
Key Metrics to Watch
Users
Unique visitors. The main traffic number.
Sessions
Individual visits. One user can have multiple sessions.
Engagement Rate
% of users who actually interacted (not bounced).
Average Engagement Time
How long users spend actively on your site.
Conversions
Goal completions — form fills, signups, purchases.
Traffic Sources
Where visitors come from: Organic Search, Direct, Social, Referral, Paid.
Reports to Check Weekly
- Acquisition → Traffic acquisition — where visitors came from
- Engagement → Pages and screens — which pages perform best
- Engagement → Events — what users actually did
- Retention — do users come back?
Privacy & Consent
If you have EU visitors, you need a cookie consent banner. GA4 supports consent mode.
GA4 vs Search Console
GA4 shows on-site behaviour. Search Console shows search performance (impressions, clicks, positions). Use both together for the full picture.
